  • RIP Derek Martinus

    Hello all, the Historian here. I’ve just returned from the first day of the Emerald City Comic Convention and seen the sad news that Derek Martinus has died at the age of 82. Martinus directed a good number of the stories we’ve seen in the Project, although we were sadly only to get a general idea of his direction as many of his episodes are currently missing. His Doctor Who stories were:

    Galaxy Four
    Mission to the Unknown
    The Tenth Planet
    Evil of the Daleks
    The Ice Warriors

    And Jon Pertwee’s first story, Spearhead From Space, which falls just outside the range of the Project.

    We salute Mr. Martinus’ work and thank him for the hours of enjoyment he gave Doctor Who fans. Rest in peace, sir.

  • Short Break and Emerald City Comic Con

    Sorry that we didn’t have a post last Friday. We’re interrupting The Dominators for a few weeks. We’ll be back on Friday, April 4th.

    In the meantime, come see us a Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle on the weekend of March 28 – 30 (2014). We don’t have a table, but we plan to at least attend any Doctor Who panels and hand out fliers about the site.  I hope that some of you are new readers that we met at the Con. Feel free to comment below if you are!

  • RIP Christoper Barry

    Hello everyone, the Historian here, with some sad news. One of the great directors of Doctor Who’s first fifteen years or so, Christopher Barry, has passed away. He was 88.

    Barry’s directoral career was large and long, and he directed at least one story for each of the first four Doctors. Of the stories that form part of the TARDIS Project, Barry directed about two-thirds of The Daleks (no, he was not responsible for “The Ordeal”), The Rescue, The Romans, The Savages (all for William Hartnell’s Doctor) and Patrick Troughton’s first story, The Power of the Daleks (for which there isn’t yet a wrapup post). He also directed the Jon Pertwee classic The Daemons…and the less classic The Mutants. For Tom Baker, he directed Robot (Tom’s first story), The Brain of Morbius and The Creature From the Pit.

    More than all of that, though, Christopher Barry was reported to be a real gentleman. And he became a familiar face and voice on Doctor Who DVDs, appearing in numerous documentaries and recording commentaries.

    Another of the greats who contributed to the most classic of the “Classic Series” is gone. The TARDIS Project salutes Christopher Barry. Our best to his family and friends.

  • We’ve moved!

    Welcome to the new permanent home of the TARDIS Project. We’ve move from Blogspot to Tardisproject.net, and hope to stay for a long time.

    Old readers may have noted that our last post of Blogspot was in August of 2011. I’m back dating this post to fall just after that one, although I’m actually posting this News Post on January 3rd, 2014. While we stopped posting on Blogspot, we never stopped the project, and have continued to watch one classic episode each week on (most) Friday nights.
    The new posts lack episode summaries, which is one of the reasons why the previous site died out. It was getting too challenging to keep those up. But we’ve continued with our lively discussions of the episodes each week, and hope to entertain with witty (and no-so-witty) repartee. The summaries may get added at a later time. We’re also lacking story and season wrap-ups, but it wouldn’t be the first time our format has changed over the years.

    At this point we’ve just wrapped up our holiday break and will be starting on the last story of season 5 tonight. That’s well over two seasons since our last post, the last story of the Celestial Toymaker. I hope you enjoy catching up with us!

  • RIP Roy Skelton

    Hello all, the Historian here. Yes, I know this isn’t the post you might have been expecting (I’ll catch up soon! I promise!), but I wanted to note the sad passing of actor Roy Skelton, one of the not-sung-enough heroes of Doctor Who. He was the voice of the Daleks from 1967 until 1988 as well as voicing the Cybermen and multitudes of other creatures and appearing on-screen in the Third Doctor’s final adventure, “Planet of the Spiders.” As an odd coincidence, the TARDIS Project will be watching Skelton’s first work for the show this week (and I will hopefully catch up on things and blog about it by next week).

    RIP Mr. Skelton. Thanks for making so many monsters as scary and believable as they can be.

  • Late Post

    Hello everyone, the Historian here. As you can obviously tell, last week’s post is kind of late. Immediately before watching the episode, I was felled with what can only be described as a terrible cold that only got worse over the next few days. I’m finally seeing daylight at the other side of the tunnel, so I’ll get to work on the summary soon.

    The only vaguely positive note is that last week’s post was going to announce that we’d be taking a week off this week, due to personal commitments of core Project personnel. (It’s someone’s tenth anniversary, congrats you two!) But now, you’ll get a post anyway! Sure, it’ll be last week’s post, but…

    So yes. “The Sea Beggar” will be coming soon, I promise. Until then, I remain

  • The TARDIS Project lands in the Emerald City!

    For any readers in the Seattle area, Project members Ketina, Ronelyn, (maybe) Cz and I will be at the Emerald City Comicon this Saturday, March 5th. We’ll be wandering the floor, together or separately, probably for most of the day. I’ve no idea what I’ll be wearing, but Ketina tells me you can just “look for a woman with long purple hair in a Doctor Who t-shirt. Seriously, how many of those can there be a convention?” We should have TARDIS Project business cards (no idea how many, though!) to hand out to all and sundry…or simply sundry, depending on how long they last. You can ask us about the blog, give us feedback or just talk Doctor Who in person–how exciting!

    Hope to see a few of you there! And look for the new “Daleks’ Master Plan” episode post this weekend as well!
